Toshiba has unveiled its latest range of 1.8-inch hard disk drives called the MK1634GAL. These are said to be capable of storing up to 160GB of data per platter. These new drives boast of a five-millimeter high profile and target the next-generation portable media players and digital video cameras. Recently, Toshiba released a 2.5-inch HHD that offered a storage capacity of 640GB.
The drives claim to features an areal density of 723Mbit/mm. Apart from this, the series is also said to offer the best storage capacity, best power consumption efficiency, highest durability and quietest seek operation.
Allegedly, the Toshiba drive is ideal for audio and video playback applications because of its features like PATA interface, 4,200 RPM rotational speed and acoustic-reduction. They also claim to provide a small footprint and quiet operation to maximize the entertainment experience. These new drives promise to provide around 24 percent improvement in energy consumption. The MK1634GAL complies with the European Union’s RoHS directive and is said to be completely halogen free.
At present only the 160GB MK1634GAL is available for purchase. The company plans to start shipping the 60GB, 80GB and 120GB models later this month. The pricing details of these drives are still under wraps.
