O2 soon to unveil Palm Pre in the UK

Palm Pre O2

Smartphone companies and network providers are increasingly attempting to integrate handset functionality and the Internet for those who like to stay connected on the go. O2 has now announced that it will be out with the Palm Pre this October.

The device operates with the Linux based webOS and is sold with the Palm Touchstone charging dock that makes wires redundant. The Touchstone powers up the phone without needing a wire connection. WebOS enabled Palm Synergy gives users the opportunity of logging onto social networking sites as well as Microsoft’s Outlook via Exchange ActiveSync. The product is engineered to support multi-tasking. It has GPS and is 3G and Wi-Fi compatible as well.

“There’s a lot of excitement about Palm Pre in Europe as we continue to expand Palm webOS products across new carriers and countries,” said Jon Rubinstein chairman and chief executive officer, Palm, Inc. “We look forward to launching Palm Pre with O2 so people in the UK can see firsthand how Palm webOS offers a new and better smartphone experience.”

The handset’s body is smoothly rounded with a sliding keyboard and tactile interface. Users can browse online, access photos, videos and more without sliding out the keyboard. The smartphone will be available in the UK and as well as online from 16 October, 2009.

The Palm webOS is free for O2 clientele with a £73.41 (approx. Rs.5,636) 18-month or £44.05 (approx. Rs.3,382) 24-month contract. The company offers unlimited data browsing on its HSDPA network as well as complete Wi-Fi access to BT and The Cloud hotspots. Active business clientele on a £30.91 (approx. Rs.2,373) 24 or 36-month contract can get the product for free too. The package includes unlimited O2 to O2 calls, multi-user billing, shareable text and minutes between O2 users, unlimited calls to ten landlines, full-time access to business customer care consultants and more. The TouchStone and Back Cover cost £44.11 (approx. Rs.3,386).
