WD Media Player

WD is among the market leaders when it comes to offering storage solutions. But now the company plans to expand its product range by offering a new version of its popular WD TV media player that claims to provide consumers with more affordable ways for playing their stored digital content in up to 1080i HD resolution directly on the HDTV.

The WD TV Mini Media Player once connected to a user’s television will play digital movies, music and photos stored on any USB drive. This device also supports playback of digital media on most mass storage devices such as digital camcorders and digital cameras. This player comes in a compact chassis that makes it portable and easy to move around. Through this player, the playback of RealNetworks RealVideo has also been made possible.

“The popularity of the RealVideo format and its compatibility with the WD TV Mini Media Player makes it an excellent solution for consumers who wish to enjoy their RealVideo content on their TVs,” said Scott Nelson, director of business development for RealNetworks.

Research firm Associates puts forth that an average consumer household today holds approximately 289GB of digital media that will reach to 898GB by 2012. These digital libraries are trapped on user’s computers. Transferring this content is also a task in itself as there are clumsy solutions such as copying this content onto multiple CDs and DVDs or connecting PCs to their TVs by means of wires or complicated home networking solutions. But the WD TV Mini Media Player now changes this situation.

“For those who desire an easy, affordable and portable solution to enjoy their digital media on their TV and who have content in RealVideo format, the new WD TV Mini Media Player fits the bill,” said Mr. Sharad Srivastava, Director Sales (India & South Asia), Western Digital. “The new WD TV Mini Media Player unlocks the content from their PCs and storage devices and makes it simple for people to enjoy their media on their home theater system, without the need to spend time configuring a complicated device or transcoding files to make them compatible.”

This player perfectly suits the needs of consumers with large media collection who are on the look out for an easy and affordable solution to watch their digital media. This device also includes features such as an expandable storage, thumbnail support, ability to preview video during navigation along with video, music, photo auto-play and multi-language subtitle support.

This device is backed with a digital optical audio output via SPDIF and has Picture Transfer Protocol to view or backup content. The one year warranty of this device makes it further attractive. This media player is available through selected retailers for a price of Rs. 6,000.
