Finally the wait for Amazon Kindle 2 is over! People, who want to own the revolutionary e-book reader, can immediately order for one as the company has started shipping the device. Amazon has announced the shipment of the next-generation Amazon Kindle, aptly named the Amazon Kindle 2.

Ian Freed, vice president, Amazon Kindle, explained, “The response from customers to Kindle 2 has been tremendous. In order to ensure we ship Kindle 2 by the original ship day of Feb. 24, we started shipping one day early. We’re excited about the new design and features of Kindle 2, and we think our customers will be too.”

At just 0.36-inches and 10 ounces, the pen thin e-book reader sports a new 5-way controller to easily and precisely highlight text in both up-and-down and side-to-side lines. The controller also helps users to conveniently skip between articles and sections of newspapers. Moreover, it enables users to turn pages 20 percent faster as compared to the former display.

The slimmer and sleeker e-reader is capable of wirelessly delivering content, features a six-inch 600 x 800 screen, allowing users to enjoy crisp text and sharper images. Additionally, it claims to display fonts in printed formats as it takes full advantage of real ink and not backlight that causes eyestrain.

From the available six text sizes, users can choose any one that delivers an effective reading experience. According to Amazon, the Kindle 2 also lets users to add bookmarks and notes, read personal documents such as Microsoft Word and PDF and also go online on Web, Wikipedia, Kindle Store and Your Kindle Library.

Boasting 2 GB of onboard memory, users can store up to 1,500 books and even purchase more from the Kindle store or re-download titles wirelessly through the library. Users can enjoy reading their magazines, newspapers, novels and other book for four to five days continuously with wireless support and for more than two weeks with non-wireless support.

The device also comes incorporated with the New Oxford American Dictionary with 250,000 word definitions. Other unique feature is the Read-To-Me function that speaks out the written words on a page, allowing users to listen to the novel if reading has created boredom. Another listening preference enables users to choose from male and female voice options.

With the integration of Amazon Whispernet, Kindle 2 has the ability to wirelessly download or receive new titles in less than 60 seconds. Supporting Sprint’s national 3G data network, the electronic paper display requires no PC and Wi-Fi hot spot to access digital contents. Users can easily shop for their favorite titles from over 230,000 books available in the Kindle Store. Furthermore, users can also read from their library – all without monthly wireless bills, data plans and service commitments.

If consumers already own the original Kindle and want the all-new slimmer Kindle 2, then they can even sync both the e-readers through Amazon Whispersync technology.

The Amazon Kindle 2 electronics paper display has immediately started shipping for $359 (approx. Rs. 17,465).
